Near-Gem 1840 With Drapery Dime Rarity

1840 10C Drapery MS64 PCGS Secure. CAC. Most 1840 Seated Liberty dimes are the No Drapery coins, with few of these later With Drapery pieces minted. Gerry Fortin writes at seateddimevarieties.com that "this date is very underrated as few examples are known" in Mint State grades. The population data bears that out as PCGS and NGC have each certified just one MS64 and one finer. Fortin has identified eight different die varieties of the No Drapery coins, but only one variety of the With Drapery type. The specialist will understand just how important an opportunity is presented here. Both sides are fully lustrous and sharply defined with only wispy champagne toning over brilliant silver surfaces. A few scattered marks on each side are consistent with the grade. Population: 1 in 64, 1 finer (8/10).
