Description

Small O Transitional Reverse 1841-O Dime
Key New Orleans Variety, FS-901

1841-O 10C Transitional Reverse, Small O PCGS Secure Genuine. Fortin-102, FS-901, R.7. The PCGS number ending in .92 suggests Cleaning as the reason, or perhaps one of the reasons, that PCGS deemed this coin not gradable. In our opinion, this coin has the details of an XF specimen that has been cleaned. The slate-gray surfaces are subdued but well defined and smooth save for a brief scratch on the reverse near 4 o'clock.
The Open Bud reverse was introduced in 1841, making the Closed Bud reverse obsolete. Nearly all 1841-O dimes have the Open Bud reverse, but leftover dies were used at New Orleans in 1841, since surviving Closed Bud examples exist. They are rare, yet have two mintmark style varieties, a Small O and Large O. The Large O is very rare yet more available than the Small O variety, which is extremely rare.
