Description

1842 Seated Dime, MS65
Fortin-106a, Rare Polished Die State

1842 10C MS65 NGC. CAC. Fortin-106a, R.7. This rare late die state variant of Fortin-106 was discovered by Larry Briggs at the January 2011 FUN show. The dies are heavily polished to the point of delivering a prooflike appearance that has caused some series specialists to wonder if the coins struck from this polished die state were perhaps intended to be proofs. However, it is equally possible that the dies were worked down to remove rust or clash marks.

This Gem example delivers noticeable cameo contrast with bold, satiny devices and highly reflective fields. Pale champagne toning dominates each side, but yields occasional splashes of lavender and aquamarine color throughout. No lintmarks are discernible, an aspect of this coin which differs from the 2011 discovery piece. Census: 7 in 65, 5 finer (4/15).(Registry values: N2998)
