Description
1845-O F-101a Dime, MS63
Second Finest Known
1845-O 10C F-101a, R.4, MS63 NGC. The mintage for the 1845-O
dime was large with 230,000 pieces struck, but attrition has
obviously taken a heavy toll. It is available in Good through VF,
but it quickly becomes scarce in XF and better grades. In
Uncirculated grades it is very rare. Combining the Mint State
populations of both grading services yields only six examples, and
this is the second finest of those -- second only to the MS69
Eliasberg coin. As expected from the 101a designation, the dies
were polished and the fields retain evidence of that mint-induced
field brightness. Well-struck overall, as usual for the issue, but
this an unusual trait for a New Orleans product from this era. The
surfaces retain much underlying brightness with both sides showing
a thin veil of interspersed rose and lilac toning.Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 537834, Base PCGS# 4587)
