Description
1846 Dime, AU58
One of the Finest Known
1846 10C AU58 NGC. Fortin-101. This is an exceptionally rare
date in any grade above VG, although a small number of proof
examples are also known. It seems that the middle and higher range
of circulated coins are seldom seen, and Mint State examples are
extremely rare. The combined population of both PCGS and NGC, for
example, include 203 coins with an average grade of "VF24.6." Keep
in mind that the grading service population data is always biased
toward the higher grades, and one can gain a better appreciation
for the importance of this offering. This example is bettered by
only one example certified by NGC for this date, while two
submissions at PCGS have received a higher Mint State grade, and
probably represent a single coin. This is a pleasing example of the
date with light silver surfaces and reflective fields. The obverse
has peripheral gold toning and the reverse has splashes of gold and
sky blue color. Census: 1 in 58, 1 finer (11/14).Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 7/2006), lot 609.(Registry values: N1793)
