Description

The Pittman 1850-O Seated Dime, MS67
Probably the Finest Known

1850-O 10C MS67 PCGS Secure. CAC. Fortin-105. Ex: Pittman. A rare variety with a high date clearly separated from the base of Liberty, combined with a reverse having a Large Oblique O that leans sharply to the left. The Fortin plate coin for the variety is XF45. The mintage of 510,000 1850-O dimes does little to tell of the actual rarity of this issue. The average certified grade is only about AU50.
This is the only Superb Gem 1850-O dime that PCGS has certified, with one similar piece that is NGC certified. It is also the first MS67 1850-O dime that we have ever offered. In our auction archives are three MS66 coins that all failed to find buyers, meaning that a single MS65 is the finest we have previously sold, followed by an AU58, the second finest we have sold in the past.
An amazing Superb Gem, this coin from the Pittman Collection exhibits frosty mint luster and bold design elements beneath rich gold and iridescent toning. We believe that this piece is the finest known 1850-O dime. Population: 1 in 67, 0 finer (8/10).
Ex: David Bullowa (9/27/1947); John Jay Pittman (David Akers, 10/1997), lot 608.
