1851 Dime, Toned MS67
One of the Two Finest Known

1851 10C MS67 NGC. Fortin-106. Whispers of russet visit the margins of the silver-gray surfaces of this delightful Superb Gem, the toning being a shade or two darker on the reverse. Well-struck on the design features, though the foot is weak. Impeccable preservation contributes to the coin's pleasing eye appeal.

Variety: Fortin-106, High R.3.

Population (3/15): NGC and PCGS have each seen one example in MS67, the finest certified.

Heritage Commentary: The 1851 dime is a significant condition rarity in Gem and finer, where the two services have seen a mere eight coins.

Consignor Commentary: A lovely and interesting coin which I don't think conforms to any of the varieties listed by Fortin. It seems closest to Fortin-106. The second 1 in the date is certainly recut, but there is no evidence of a 5 in the drapery. There is definitely an irregularity in the lower left portion of the shield, possibly the flag of an errant 1, but it is hard to tell. The coin itself is a beauty, and well-struck with smooth, unblemished surfaces.
