Description

1856 Dime, MS65
Fortin-107, Small Date

1856 10C Small Date MS65 PCGS. Fortin-107, High R.4. The Small Date is the more common of the two chief varieties, but this lustrous Gem represents an interesting and elusive subvariety with the bottom curves of misplaced date numerals visible in the base below Liberty. The design elements are generally well-struck, save for some minor softness in some of the stars and denticles, which is typical for the issue. A few minute obverse handling marks are not bothersome, and prominent horizontal die lines on the reverse behind UNITED serve as a chief diagnostic for this variety. Light golden toning complements rich, satiny luster on each side. Population: 21 in 65 (1 in 65+), 7 finer (4/14).
Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 11/2007), lot 381.
