Description
1856-S Dime, MS63
Only 70,000 Coins Struck
The First San Francisco Dime Issue
1856-S 10C F-101, R.5, MS63 NGC. Concerning Mint State
examples of the 1856-S dime, the new Guide Book of Liberty
Seated Silver Coins by Q. David Bowers states: "... only a few
exist." NGC lists three such coins and PCGS eight, although
certified population figures have been suspected of reflecting
resubmissions in the past and have a reputation for changing. In
addition to this conditional rarity, the 1856-S draws attention as
the first dime coinage from the San Francisco Mint and with its low
mintage of only 70,000 pieces. The bold strike typically found on
the 1856-S is on full display throughout this Select
representative. Silver-gray surfaces with occasional golden tinges
exhibit subtly frosted luster with moderate granularity in the
fields. Three minute ticks on Liberty's left (facing) arm are the
only mentionable flaws. A not-to-be-missed S-mint key date. Census:
1 in 63, 1 finer (10/16).Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 538089, Base PCGS# 4613)
Weight: 2.49 grams
Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
