Description

1857 Dime, MS66
Attractive Iridescent Toning
Fortin-111 Plate Coin

1857 10C MS66 NGC. Fortin-111. Cobalt-blue patina blankets the obverse of this Premium Gem 1857 dime, while the reverse features multihued peripheral toning with a brilliant center.

Variety: The Fortin-111 is identified by a high, bold date that slopes severely downward to the right. The ball of the 5 in the date nearly touches the left upright.

Population Data (4/15): NGC reports 13 submissions in MS66 with a lone MS67 finer. PCGS show four MS66 and one MS67 finer.

Heritage Commentary: The present example is the plate coin for the Fortin-111 variety in Gerry Fortin's online reference to Liberty Seated dimes. Silver coinage expanded following the weight reduction in 1853 (mandated by the Mint Act of that year), and for 1857 Fortin has identified 15 distinct obverse and 15 reverse dies.

Consignor Commentary: Fortin-111, from the position and slope of the date and the presence of several small die chips around stars 3-6. Although one of the more common dates in the series, this is a beautifully toned example. The fields are completely clean with no irregularities.

Provenance: Purchased from Legend Numismatics (4/2005).(Registry values: N1)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 238X, PCGS# 4614, Greysheet# 4050)
