Description

1858-S Seated Dime, MS62
Important, Low-Mintage Issue
One of the Better-Known Examples

1858-S 10C MS62 PCGS. CAC. Fortin-101, Greer-101. The 1858-S is a scarce, low-mintage issue of 60,000 pieces, and a key date among the post-Arrows, Type Two Seated dimes. On this scarce Fortin variety, the medium date slopes upward and there are die chips around stars 3 though 6 and around stars 12 and 13. On the reverse, the mintmark is tilted slightly to the right. According to Fortin: "Variety 101 is very difficult to locate."

This is a sharply struck example with pleasing gold-tan toning and few surface marks. A satiny, attractive piece that seems conservatively graded. PCGS has seen two examples (including this one) at this grade level, two others rated at MS63, and one extraordinary piece graded MS67 (3/14).(Registry values: N4719)
