Description
Conditionally Rare 1858-S Dime, MS63
1858-S 10C MS63 NGC. Fortin-101. The 1858-S is one of the rarest Seated dimes in Mint State grades. In fact, the average certified grade is less than XF, telling the importance of high grade pieces. Three die varieties are identified by Gerry Fortin, who implies that the 101 variety is the rarest. Fortin writes: "Variety 103 followed by Variety 102 appear to be the more common die pairings based on my serious examination of circulated specimens during the past ten years or so."Certainly, Fortin would have preferred to examine Mint State coins, but NGC and PCGS have only certified seven Mint State examples in all grades. Those seven coins include just two that grade finer than this piece. It is fully lustrous with bright silver surfaces, sharp design features, splashes of iridescent toning, and reflective fields. Census: 1 in 63, 1 finer (7/10).
