1859 Dime, Brilliant MS67
Only One Finer at Each Service

1859 10C F-107, R.3, MS67 NGC. This variety shows tiny die chips near stars 2 through 8, 12, and 13. Obverse 7 is the only die with this date placement relative to the shield point. The reverse is perfect. There had been a severe oversupply of subsidiary silver coins in the East since the passage of the Mint Act of 1853, which reduced the silver weight of the half dime, dime, quarter, and half dollar. The law explicitly prohibited the free coinage of silver, yet Mint Director James Ross Snowden continued to accept all silver bullion deposits throughout the 1850s, striking subsidiary coins without consideration for their commercial demand. The overabundance of small-denomination silver coins in Atlantic cities helps to explain the relative availability of high-grade P-mint dimes from the mid-to-late 1850s, including the 1859 (429,200 pieces produced).

This Superb Gem 1859 dime is brilliant throughout and displays shimmering luster. Typical strike incompleteness is confined to the right obverse stars, Liberty's head, and right (facing) hand. Eye appeal is outstanding. Census: 14 in 67 (1 in 67 ★ ), 1 finer (10/18).
