Description

1860 Dime, Beautifully Toned MS67
First Year of the Legend Obverse

1860 10C MS67 PCGS. CAC. Fortin-102. A melange of bluish-gray, reddish-peach, and soft aqua-green patination covers the highly lustrous surfaces of this Superb Gem. The design elements are well-struck, and neither side reveals any marks of consequence. This piece displays beautiful eye apeal.

Variety: Fortin-102, R.3.

Population (3/15): PCGS shows two pieces in MS67 (one MS67+) and a single MS68 finer. NGC reports three in MS67 and none finer. This is one of two in MS67 with the CAC green approval sticker.

Heritage Commentary: The 1860 comes from a mintage of 606,000 pieces and is the first year of the regular-issue Legend Obverse subtype.

Consignor Commentary: Fortin-102 is identified by the far right position of the date, its slight upslope, and the thin base of the numeral 1. A semi-scarce date in Mint State (Greer-Low R.4) which has drawn little comment as there are no major die variations to report, and many of the coins surrounding it are more interesting rarities. A beautifully toned coin.

Provenance: Purchased from Joseph O'Connor (4/2008). (Registry values: N1)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 239D, PCGS# 4631, Greysheet# 4053)

Weight: 2.49 grams

Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
