Description

1860-S Dime, MS64
Final-Year Stars Obverse Issue

1860-S 10C F-101, R.4, MS64 NGC. This pleasing, original near-Gem, shows surfaces layered in lilac-gray, tan-gold, and orange patina with flashes of crimson iridescence near the lower reverse border, a softly frosted survivor with bold overall strike definition, free of singularly distracting marks.

Variety: Fortin-101. The medium date slopes downward. Medium S mintmark.

Population Data (9/15): This MS64 NGC piece is tied with one other and there is one MS66 finer. PCGS reports one in MS64 and three in MS65.

Heritage Commentary: The 1860-S is the final business strike issue in the Seated dime series with stars on the obverse and the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the reverse. Both the P- and O-mint deliveries of this year are of the new Legend Obverse type. Delays in transporting the new dies from Philadelphia prevented the San Francisco Mint from implementing the design in a timely manner. Produced to the extent of just 140,000 coins, it is little wonder that this early frontier era issue is difficult to locate in all Mint State grades.

Gene Gardner also owned an MS65 PCGS CAC-approved example of this date, which was lot 98235 in our Gardner Part III Signature (Heritage, 5/2015), where it realized $37,600 in spirited competition among seven different bidders.

Provenance: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 10/2001), lot 5967.
