    1860-S Dime, Lovely Toned MS65
    Ex: Simpson, Conditionally Quite Rare

    1860-S 10C MS65 PCGS Secure. CAC. Fortin-102. Ex: Simpson. This gorgeous Gem displays full frosty mint brilliance with lustrous surfaces hosting delightful gold, russet, blue, and violet toning. The surfaces are exceptional with only a few minuscule ticks.

    Variety: Fortin-102, High R.4. Level date, Medium S mintmark. Two varieties are known, and the Fortin-102 variety represented here is slightly more difficult to locate.

    Population Data (3/15): PCGS shows three in MS65 with none finer. One MS66 at NGC is finer.

    Heritage Commentary: The final Stars Obverse issue, and the only example of the type dated 1860, resulting from slow receipt of new dies at the San Francisco Mint. Only 140,000 examples were struck. Like so many Seated dimes, this issue is rare in Mint State and extremely rare at the Gem level. The Fortin plate coin at SeatedDimeVarieties.com is VF20, and even that grade is respectable for an 1860-S dime.

    Consignor Commentary: This issue is R.7 in Mint State. One of three graded at this level by PCGS with none finer, and it is hard to believe that any of the other two could be better. This Gem is sharply struck with even natural toning and no mentionable surface imperfections.
