1866-S Dime, MS66
Tied for Finest Certified

1866-S 10C MS66 NGC. Fortin-101. A veil of light golden toning covers this lustrous Premium Gem. The devices are well-struck with a hint of softness on Liberty's head and the bowknot. The mintmark is clearly defined, unlike many examples from the issue. Near-pristine surfaces are devoid of any mentionable marks. An impeccable S-mint representative.

Variety: Fortin-101, identified by a sharp downward-sloping date, a vertical die crack running from Liberty's head down through the shield, and a so-called small, weak mintmark. It is, however, clearly visible despite the nomenclature.

Population Data (3/15): This example is tied with one other MS66 coin for finest at NGC. PCGS shows two MS65 and none finer.

Heritage Commentary: The issue (135,000 coins struck) is very rare in Uncirculated condition. Approximately 20 pieces survive in all Mint State grade levels. This example, which has been off the market for 15 years, is tied with the Bob Simpson coin for finest certified. However, this piece is arguably more eye-appealing.

Consignor Commentary: Must be a somewhat early strike, as the vertical die break bisecting the obverse, mentioned in Fortin, is present mainly on Liberty's bust and abdomen with just a hint of it up toward Liberty's head. Other than the slight die break, there is just one dark spot near the first S in STATES, otherwise perfect. Beautiful light toning.
