Description

1868 Dime, Frosty Gem
Rarely Seen Finer

1868 10C F-104a, R.4, MS65 NGC. This example features sunset-orange, magenta, and steel-blue toning that is deeper near the rims. The sharply struck devices feature noticeable frost on each side. A magnificent Gem, rarely seen finer.

Variety: Fortin-104a. This variety is struck from the proof dies and features a high, weak, downward-sloping date with a full S1 in STATES. Random die lines occur over Liberty's gown and shield. The reverse is perfect.

Population Data (9/15): NGC data show eight submissions in MS65 and two finer, both MS66. PCGS lists five submissions and also two MS66 finer.

Heritage Commentary: With a mintage approaching a half-million coins, the 1868 Seated dime ended the run of low-mintage P-mint issues that began in 1863 and continued until 1867. Despite the generous production total, survivors of this issue in higher Mint State grades prove just as, if not more elusive, than the lower-mintage dates that precede it.

Provenance: Central States Signature (Heritage, 5/2007), lot 306.

Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 538225, Base PCGS# 4647)

Weight: 2.49 grams

Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
