1868 Dime, All-Brilliant Gem
Coruscating Mint Frost

1868 10C F-107, R.4, MS65 NGC. The surfaces of this Gem P-mint dime are brilliant with just the slightest trace of toning around the obverse rim. Coruscating frost rolls over each side, and the design motifs display strong definition on Liberty's head and all wreath elements. The date is moderately soft on the lower portion of the digits, and a few pedigree identifying ticks are scattered throughout.

Variety: Fortin-107. The position of the date is the primary diagnostic marker, along with a die line from the Y in LIBERTY and a broken first S in STATES.

Population Data (9/15): NGC and PCGS have seen 13 Gems combined (eight and five pieces respectively). Each firm reports two finer submissions.

Heritage Commentary: Surprisingly, 12 obverse dies were employed to strike 464,000 dimes at Philadelphia in 1868. The high ratio suggests the Mint may have planned a drastic production hike in the wake of several low-mintage years from the early to mid-1860s.
