Description

1869 Dime, MS66+
Semireflective, Sharply Struck

1869 10C F-105a, R.4, MS66+ PCGS. CAC. The fields are bright and semireflective with evidence of a slight cartwheel effect. Golden-brown patina accents lilac and pearl-gray color overall. This Premium Gem is sharply struck throughout, save for minor softness on the upper left wheat stalk. The attractive eye appeal and superior technical grade have been dually recognized with a Plus designation from PCGS and a green sticker from CAC.

Variety: Fortin-105a. This variety has a long flag on the end of the 1 and a high, slightly upward-sloping date. Die defects in the shield also help confirm the attribution.

Population Data (9/15): PCGS has seen six Premium Gems, but this is the only Plus-designated coin. NGC shows only two in MS66, and each service reports four submissions finer.

Heritage Commentary: The 1869 is a scarcer date than one would imagine for an issue with a mintage in excess of a quarter-million pieces. When found in Uncirculated grades, examples are usually sharply struck, as is the case with this coin.

Provenance: Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2012), lot 3784.

Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 538243, Base PCGS# 4649)

Weight: 2.49 grams
