Description
1870-S Dime, MS65
Among the Rarest S-Mint Dimes
1870-S 10C Misplaced Date, F-101, R.3, MS65 PCGS. CAC.
Freckled olive-tan patina overlies richly frosted design features.
The obverse remains more brilliant than the reverse. Boldly defined
devices (apart from a bit of softness on the left wreath leaves)
and minimally marked surfaces round out the broad appeal. A few
roller marks occur over the upper-right obverse. Housed in a green
label holder.Variety: Fortin-101, rated R.6+ in Mint State. The only known dies for the issue.
Population Data (9/15): PCGS and NGC show six MS65 coins apiece. There are four finer PCGS-certified examples, while the six Gems at NGC are the finest at that service. Five in this grade have the green CAC approval.
Heritage Commentary: The 1870-S is the rarest S-mint issue in the entire Seated dime series after the 1885-S. Only 50,000 pieces were produced, and this Gem is in the upper echelon of surviving representatives.
Provenance: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 10/2001), lot 5982.
Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 538254, Base PCGS# 4652)
Weight: 2.49 grams
Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
