Description

1870-S Dime, Top-Grade MS66
Among the Rarest S-Mint Dimes

1870-S 10C Misplaced Date, F-101, R.3, MS66 PCGS. CAC. The 1870-S is the rarest S-mint issue in the entire Seated dime series after the 1885-S. Only 50,000 pieces were produced, and this Gem is in the upper echelon of surviving representatives. Freckled olive-tan patina overlies richly frosted design features. The obverse remains more brilliant than the reverse. Boldly defined devices (apart from a bit of softness on the left wreath leaves) and minimally marked surfaces round out the broad appeal. A few roller marks occur over the upper-right obverse. The only known die variety of the issue (rated High R.6 in Mint State) shows two misplaced numerals below 87 in the date, which have been of mild interest to Seated dime specialists in recent years. Population: 5 in 66, 0 finer. CAC: 3 in 66, 0 finer (9/16).
