    None Finer at PCGS
    Fortin-103, FS-301, Repunched Date

1873 10C Closed 3, No Arrows, Repunched Date, F-103, FS-301, R.3, MS66 PCGS. CAC. A Top 100 Seated Dime Variety. This Premium Gem is fairly well-struck with deep blue-green, violet, and gold patina on each side. Vibrant luster enlivens the carefully preserved surfaces, adding to this coin's CAC-approved aesthetic appeal.

Variety: Fortin-103, FS-301. All four date digits show bold repunching with the underdigits somewhat left of the subsequent punches. also notes a "diagonal die line in the lower right gown," clearly visible on this example. Fortin suggests that this R.3 variety is worth a premium of 30% to 50%. The Cherrypickers' Guide comments that "this variety is still very scarce."

Population Data (9/15): This MS66 piece is among the four finest submitted to PCGS. NGC also shows five Premium Gems (one certified as F-103) with a single MS67 submission.

Heritage Commentary: The year 1873 is significant in the history of American coinage. The Mint Act of 1873 had a number of provisions that included the introduction of the Trade dollar, the abolition of the standard silver dollar, half dime, two cent piece, and a small increase in the weight of subsidiary coins. This Premium Gem was struck early in the year prior to the passage of the bill. Later, an Open 3 replaced the Closed 3, and arrows were added beside the date.

Provenance: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2012), lot 5483.
