Description

1873-CC Arrows Dime, AU50
One of the Finest-Known Examples

1873-CC 10C Arrows AU50 PCGS. CAC. With a low mintage of 18,791 coins, the 1873-CC Arrows dime is a key issue in the Seated dime series. Precious few of the coins have survived in higher grades of AU or in Mint State, and a high percentage of examples are damaged in some respect. A cursory examination of our Auction Archives shows that the majority of the 1873-CC Arrows dimes sold by Heritage have been in impaired condition, making a problem-free specimen such as this one especially desirable.

Many collectors feel a special fondness for the 1873-CC Arrows dimes because of the "Eliasberg Connection." The unique 1873-CC No Arrows dime was the last coin that Louis Eliasberg obtained to complete his collection, after 25 years of effort, of one of each date and mintmark of U.S. coinage from the 1793 half cent to the 1932 double eagle. He bought the 1873-CC No Arrows dime from Jim Kelly in 1950; Kelly and Eliasberg had battled for the coin in the sale of the Adophe Menjou collection earlier in that year, when Eliasberg dropped out because he thought the coin was too expensive.

Most collectors, of course, will never own the No Arrows 1873-CC, but the present 1873-CC Arrows coin is one that any numismatist should be proud to add to his or her collection. The conditional rarity of the piece is one of its chief attributes, of course, as it resides in the upper tier of graded examples. PCGS has seen two at this grade level, including the present piece, with two coins rated higher; while NGC has graded none at AU50, and just three examples finer.

The lovely antique-silver surfaces exhibit champagne accents near the peripheries; more noticeably so on the obverse. Slight wear is evident on the upper portions of Liberty's head and flag; the shield, the scroll edges, and LIBERTY are sharp. On the reverse, the high points of the wreath and ONE DIME also display a normal degree of wear for the grade. Small abrasions reside near the reverse center, but the obverse only shows a few trivial marks. Population: 2 in 50, 2 finer (3/14).(Registry values: N4719)
