Description
1874-CC Seated Liberty Dime, AU53
Low-Mintage Arrows Issue
Only Two Finer Coins at NGC
1874-CC 10C Arrows AU53 NGC. The 1874-CC Seated Liberty dime
boasts a low mintage of 10,817 pieces, making it an elusive date
and one of the keys to the Seated dime series. The issue also
represents the short-lived Arrows design that is so popular with
type collectors. The arrows on either side of the date indicate a
weight change that was mandated on most silver denominations in
1873. The Arrows design was only used on dimes during 1873 and
1874. Brian Greer evaluated the 1874-CC in his Complete Guide to
Liberty Seated Dimes:"The unquestioned key to the series (excluding the uncollectible 1873-CC No Arrows). Rare in any grade and probably a full R.6 in problem-free condition. Very few mint state pieces exist. Under intense demand and currently bringing well in excess of Trends prices, when available."
The rarity of the 1874-CC was recognized as soon as Augustus Heaton published his reference on mintmarks in 1893. Heaton noted that all CC-mint dimes from 1871-1874 were rare and the "1874 is the highest rarity of the four." Collectors value the 1874-CC in all grades and conditions, as evidenced by an early auction appearance in lot 1356 of the B.W. Smith Collection (B. Max Mehl, 5/1915), under the heading Dimes/Carson City Mint:
"1874 Good but slightly bent. Extremely rare. Record for a good specimen $7.25."
The fact that $7.25 had been paid for a ten cent coin in 1915, when the average daily wage was $1.63 shows how highly the 1874-CC was valued at the time. Recent sales include the MS62 PCGS example in Stack's Bowers August 2012 ANA Convention Sale that realized $115,000.
The coin offered here is an attractive AU53 example, with well-detailed design elements that show just a touch of wear on the high points. The lightly abraded surfaces show a blend of lavender-gray, sea-green, and amber patina, with traces of mint luster underneath. Census: 2 in 53, 2 finer (3/14).(Registry values: N7079)
