Description

1875-S Mintmark Above Bow Dime, MS66
Tied for Finest Certified

1875-S 10C Mintmark Above Bow MS66 NGC. Fortin-101. Strong luster emanates from the light silver-gray surfaces of this S-mint Premium Gem dime. Most design elements are relatively well-defined except for weakness at Liberty's head and foot, which usually appear flat. No mentionable marks appear on either side.

Variety: Fortin-101, R.3. Spindly die cracks show around the reverse periphery, but the lower reverse is still in its precud state, at which point it would become Fortin-101a.

Population Data (3/15): The finest certified at six MS66 and NGC and three in MS66 at PCGS.

Heritage Commentary: The Above Bow variety is scarcer than the Below Bow. NGC reports 31 examples in all grades of the former and 64 of the latter, while PCGS posts 50 of the former and 181 of the latter.

Consignor Commentary: Fortin-101, identified by the pattern of die cracks on the reverse, especially those through the lower-left wreath to the rim. The reverse die is heavily clashed, most noticeably to the right of the mintmark. The scarcer of the two mintmark varieties.
