Description

1878-CC Dime, Superb Gem
Last Carson City Dime Issue

1878-CC 10C MS67 NGC. Fortin-102. A richly toned Superb Gem awash in blue-to-violet and golden-gray hues. Lustrous through the patina and solidly struck, this carefully preserved coin brims with eye appeal.

Variety: Fortin-102, attributed mainly by the reverse, where the left ribbon end is polished away at the top. Fortin-102 is very scarce to rare.

Population Data (3/15): NGC shows two in MS67 and one MS68 finer. PCGS reports one MS68 finer but none in MS67.

Heritage Commentary: The 200,000 1878-CC dimes were the last of their denomination struck at the Carson City Mint, which thereafter dedicated its silver strikings to federally mandated Morgan dollars.

Consignor Commentary: A rare (Low R.5) coin but not in the same league of difficulty as some of its Carson City predecessors. Well-struck with good detail throughout, the coin's lovely toning gives it good eye appeal.
