Description
1884-S Dime, Reflective MS66
Tied for Finest at PCGS, Ex: Simpson
1884-S 10C MS66 PCGS Secure. Fortin-102, R.3. Ex: Simpson.
The fields are reflective and fully prooflike on each side, showing
little evidence of patina but considerable field-device contrast.
The die-lapped weakness on Liberty's rock base is typical for this
die pairing. This extremely attractive coin justifies its Premium
Gem grade with no marks of any importance, despite a couple of tiny
reeding marks in the right obverse field. The 1884-S Seated dime is
a low-mintage issue of about 560,000 pieces, and few survive as
nice as this example. The underrated 1884-S was the first San
Francisco dime issue since the 1877-S, although its celebrity is
dimmed by its proximity to the 1885-S the following year, a
production of less than 44,000 pieces and a noted key date in the
series. Population: 2 in 66, 0 finer (11/15). This is the finest
shown on PCGS CoinFacts.Selections from The Bob R. Simpson Collection.(Registry values: N4719)
