Description

1887 Dime, Superb Gem
Notable Condition Rarity

1887 10C MS67 PCGS. CAC. Fortin-110. A pale pearl-gray base on the obverse is the dominant hue of the reverse, though on Lady Liberty's side bold dapples of powder-blue, golden-orange, and related shades add eye appeal. A lustrous Superb Gem beauty.

Variety: Fortin-110, based on date position and slope as well as the strong reverse die crack threading through the left side of the wreath. Fortin suggests another die crack should be present at right, though this is unseen on the current coin; such cracks, naturally, would have developed in stages.

Population Data (3/15): PCGS shows four MS67 and none finer; NGC recognizes seven MS67 and two finer. CAC has given four MS67 coins a green label but none in MS68.

Heritage Commentary: This issue's mintage of more than 11.2 million pieces was a record for the denomination to that time (later broken in 1891), yet it remains surprisingly elusive in the best grades and is a clear condition rarity as a Superb Gem.

Consignor Commentary: A beautiful, captivating Superb Gem with good luster and wonderful color.

Provenance: Purchased from Laura Sperber at Legend Numismatics (11/2005).(Registry values: N2998)
