Description

1888 Dime, MS66
Frosty and Lightly Toned

1888 10C MS66 PCGS. CAC. Frosty, mostly brilliant surfaces with blushes of light amber-gold toning provide excellent eye appeal and unequivocally merit the green CAC approval sticker for quality within the grade. The reverse details are fully defined, while a touch of softness is noted on Liberty's head. The absence of singularly distracting marks is expected given the numeric grade.

Variety: The obverse appears similar to Fortin's Obverse 13. However, this coin lacks the doubling mentioned by Fortin, and the date appears to be positioned higher. The reverse is devoid of clash marks and shows a die crack below the bowknot through the right wreath leaves. This may be either an early, unclashed die state of Fortin-113 or an unlisted variety.

Population Data (9/15): PCGS notes 28 examples in MS66 (three in MS66+) with two finer. The NGC data are nearly identical, save that only a lone MS67 is finer.

Heritage Commentary: This late-date Seated dime has an impressive production total nearing 5.5 million coins. The issue is rare in Premium Gem, and given the recent sales of the two top-graded PCGS coins, this may be one of the finest examples available for some time.

Provenance: Purchased directly from Heritage (2/2002).(Registry values: N1793)
