1889-S Dime, A Better-Struck MS65
Condition Rarity

1889-S 10C F-106, R.3, MS65 PCGS. CAC. Reddish-gold, lavender, and blue toning covers the lustrous surfaces of this attractive Gem. An above-average strike characterizes the design elements, including Liberty's hair and facial features, areas that are often weakly impressed on this issue.

Variety: Fortin-106, R.3. The medium date is level, the shield points left of the 1, the pendant is over the left side of the second 8, the 9 is nearly closed, and the Small S mintmark is positioned left and high.

Population Data (9/15): Six pieces in MS65 and two finer are reported by PCGS; eight Gems have been seen by NGC and three finer. Of the 14 submissions in MS65, six have the CAC green approval.

Heritage Commentary: Fortin assigns the following rarity ratings to the 1889-S dime: Good to Very Good, R.3; Fine to Very Fine, High R.3; Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated, R.4; MS High R.5. The current Gem offering presents the Seated dime specialist with an infrequent opportunity to acquire this important condition rarity.
