Description

Formidable Superb Gem 1891-O Dime
Single Finest NGC-Certified

1891-O 10C MS67 NGC. Immaculate and coruscating with light stone-gray toning. New Orleans struck dimes in only two years of the Legend Obverse type: the first, 1860, and the last, 1891. For the three decades in between, the Civil War, reconstruction, and heavy silver dollar coinages all kept the Southernmost branch mint from striking silver dimes. When production finally returned in 1891, the mintage of 4.54 million should have allowed a number to survive in Superb Gem, but nearly all went into commerce, and few were saved as souvenirs. The present piece is the sole MS67 at NGC. PCGS has also certified one as MS67 with none finer, and we sold that coin for $8,912.50 in a 2003 internet auction.(Registry values: N1)
