Description

PCGS 1862 MS 67. Stunning quality. It is difficult to know where to start describing this coin. The first question that comes to mind is how did this coin manage to survive the past 133 years in such pristine condition? It was 1862 when the Union suspended specie payments and widespread hoarding began throughout the North. Why was this piece not melted along with thousands of other wartime coins? The surfaces are nearly flawless, and miraculously the coin has been left to naturally tone over the decades. There is a spot of light golden patina on the lower obverse while the remainder of the coin is a rich sky-blue. Fully struck throughout with superb mint luster that glows beneath the thick, original toning. Population: 2 in 67, none are finer.
