    Description

    1840 Seated Dollar, AU58
    Album-Toned, Attractive Example

1840 $1 AU58 NGC. There was no great demand for silver dollars in 1840, which were struck in part to alleviate large number of half dollars that were required as the "coins of choice" for commerce. Most silver dollars from the 1840s circulated domestically to one extent or another, as did this lightly worn example. The attractive album toning suggests a long period of time in collector hands as well. Prooflike surfaces remain visible around the stars and devices, with only minor bagmarks and abrasions distributed over the still-lustrous surfaces. Sharp details remain at the star centers, on Liberty's features and gown, and across the eagle's entire plumage. Deep blue and gold margins with wide, square rims surround amber-gold centers. Just 61,005 silver dollars were produced for the year.(Registry values: N991) (NGC ID# 24YA, PCGS# 6926)
