Description
1842 Seated Dollar, MS64
Semiprooflike No Motto Type Coin
1842 $1 MS64 PCGS. Unlike many later issues which were
apparently used solely in foreign trade or melted by bullion
dealers, the 1842 Seated dollars did circulate to some extent in
American commerce. This, combined with a mintage of more than
184,000 coins, makes this issue one of the more plentiful No Motto
type coins in circulated grades. Mint State coins, by comparison,
are scarce, but remain more available than such examples of most
other dates from this decade. Still, the finest 1842 Seated dollars
known fall short of Gem quality. This MS64 example is a condition
rarity, and is among the finest certified of the date. Liberty's
head and figure are sharp and the stars show complete radial lines.
The eagle's talons and plumage are well-struck, although a touch of
weakness appears at the upper edge of the left (facing) wing. A
minimally abraded coin with semiprooflike fields and champagne-gray
toning. Population: 19 in 64 (1 in 64+), 0 finer (8/15).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 24YC, PCGS# 6928, Greysheet# 7192)
