1844 Seated Dollar, MS63
'Quad Stripes' Variety
Low-Mintage Issue, Few Are Finer

1844 $1 Misplaced Date, Doubled Die Obverse, OC-1, R.2, MS63 PCGS. A Top-30 Variety. Osburn-Cushing Die State c/c. In addition to being the first truly low-mintage date in the Seated dollar series (only 20,000 pieces struck), the 1844 issue is of never-ending interest to collectors for its odd obverse and multiple Mint anomalies. Numerous oddities occurred at the Philadelphia Mint in 1844 -- especially in the half dollar and dollar series -- making the date of special interest to collectors. A single die pair struck the entire Seated dollar mintage. Among its well-documented curiosities is a widely doubled obverse die with four shield stripes instead of the normal three and tripling of the outer shield border. One of the most spectacular misplaced dates in the any series shows an errant 1 and 8 in Liberty's gown. Aside from these beguiling characteristics, the dies clashed on this example to confirm the late die state. Only a relative few 1844 silver dollars survive in Mint State. This Select Uncirculated example displays variegated original toning featuring crimson-red, copper-orange and rich lilac shades on both sides. The strike is sharp throughout both sides and the eye appeal is terrific. PCGS Population: 8 in 63, 4 finer (4/25).
