    Description

    1844 Seated Liberty Dollar, MS63
    Only One Finer NGC Coin

1844 $1 MS63 NGC. Silver bullion deposits were few-and-far-between at the Philadelphia Mint in 1844. Only 20,000 business-strike Seated Liberty dollars were struck that year, all delivered on December 21st. The vertical stripes in the obverse shield show four bars in each stripe, a feature not seen on any other Seated Liberty dollar issue, including the proofs of 1844. Many researchers believe this feature indicates the coins were struck with a doubled obverse die.

The present coin is an attractive Select specimen, with sharp definition on all design elements and satiny mint luster under shades of silver-gray, pale gold, and cerulean-blue toning. Only minor signs of contact are evident and eye appeal is outstanding. Census: 3 in 63, 1 finer (12/13).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 24YE, PCGS# 6930)
