1844 Seated Dollar, Conditionally Rare MS64
    Only One Coin Certified Finer

1844 $1 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The year 1844 saw a significant drop in silver dollar production (20,000 business strikes) from the previous three years, resulting from scant supplies of silver bullion. This issue can be located in circulated grades with relatively little difficulty. Mint State pieces, on the other hand, are rare. PCGS has graded just 35 Uncirculated examples, including the present near-Gem (one of two MS64s), and an MS65 (5/13). NGC has seen a solitary MS64 and none finer.

Whispers of reddish-gold, gray, lavender, and electric-blue adhere to both sides, each of which exhibits well-struck design elements. A milling mark on Liberty's chin will aid in the identification of this particular coin.

As Bowers (1993) notes, business strikes of 1844 have "four tiny vertical stripes composing each large vertical stripe on the obverse shield, whereas all other business strikes in the Liberty Seated series from 1840 to 1873 have just three stripes. The feature is considered to be a doubled die."(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 24YE, PCGS# 6930)
