Description

1846 Seated Dollar, MS64+
Boldly Struck and Attractive

1846 $1 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. As is the situation with many Seated dollar issues of the 1840s, the 1846 is fairly common in circulated grades, but it is quite rare in Mint State. The mintage was actually fairly plentiful for this low-mintage series -- 110,600 coins -- but clearly most of the issue either circulated (including being exported and melted) or was melted domestically when its bullion value surpassed its face value by the early 1850s. This MS64+ PCGS example with the CAC approval is a powerfully attractive coin, showing rich luster under a light layer of copper, olive, light blue, and jade. Contact marks are scattered and inconsequential on this boldly struck coin. Population: 20 in 64 (2 in 64+), 2 finer (3/14).(Registry values: N4719)
