Description

1846 Seated Dollar, MS65
Very Rare in Gem

1846 $1 OC-2, R.2, MS65 NGC. A wide variety of obverse colors range from mustard to rose to steel-blue, with the last color dominating on the reverse. Strike is nearly complete and abrasions are minimal, as the Gem grade suggests. Just two die marriages exist for the 1846 Seated dollar, which share an obverse die. The present OC-2, attributable by its extension of stripe 1 line 1 of the shield and the die crack below ONE, is the scarcer of the two die marriages, accounting for only one-third of known examples, or about 1,200 coins, according to Osburn-Cushing. Combined with the 2,300 examples of OC-1, the 1846 is common in the context of the Liberty Seated dollar series. However, it is quite rare at the Gem level, and unknown any finer. PCGS and NGC have each awarded the Gem designation three times, with an additional single certification in 65+ from each service (11/25).
