Description

1847 Dollar, MS63
Problem-Free, Lightly Toned

1847 $1 MS63 NGC. CAC. Ex: La Jolla Collection. Golden-gray and powder-blue hues coalesce over the lightly abraded surfaces. The stars show nearly full radial lines, while Liberty's head, the date, and the eagle's wing feathers exhibit a degree of softness. A series of small grade-limiting ticks congregate in the fields below STATES OF. This is a delightful Select representative with attractive, problem-free surfaces.

Population Data (9/15): One of 22 Select submissions at NGC with 10 finer. PCGS also reports 22 in MS63 with 15 finer examples. CAC has endorsed two in MS63 and two finer, both MS65.

Heritage Commentary: Demand for high-denomination silver was strong in 1847, as bullion depositors requested a total of 140,750 dollars in that year. The 1847 is among the most available No Motto issues in circulated grades, but it proves far more of a challenge in Mint State -- especially with original patina and minimally distracting abrasions, as seen on this coin.

Provenance: Purchased from David Lawrence Rare Coins (10/2007).(Registry values: N2998)
