1850 Seated Dollar, MS64
Tied for Finest Certified
Only 7,500 Pieces Struck

1850 $1 MS64 NGC. OC-1, Low R.3. Ex: Sweet Collection. A Top-30 Variety. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/e. The sole 1850 circulation-strike variety OC-1 pairs a new obverse die with a carried-over 1848/1849 reverse. A new obverse die first struck 1850 proofs (paired with the original proof reverse used from 1840 thorough 1854), then was employed to strike 7,500 circulation strikes with the carried-over reverse. Many 1850 circulation strikes are at least partially prooflike and all show bold repunching on the 0 in the date. A few file marks remain below the date at the dentils. The few surviving Mint State coins are rare in MS63 and extremely so at the near-Gem level. There are no Gem 1850 circulation strikes certified by either PCGS or NGC. This near-Gem example is richly toned in gray-blue and lavender shades over semiprooflike fields surrounding coppery-gold central devices. The strike is sharp and marks are few. This coin is housed in a Generation 12 NGC holder in use from 2003 to 2004. NGC Census: 3 in 64, 0 finer (4/25).
