    1851 Seated Dollar, AU58
Rarest Philadelphia Issue in the Series

1851 $1 AU58 PCGS. The fact that most extant 1851 dollars grade XF, AU, or Mint State suggests that this issue did not see widespread circulation. Still, with a paltry original mintage of 1,300 coins, it is little wonder that the 1851 is one of the keys to the Seated dollar series. The present representative is toned in olive-gray shades with splashes of more vibrant, electric-blue color around many of the devices. Remnants of a semiprooflike finish are evident at certain angles. This sharply struck coin is remarkably abrasion-free for a near-Mint Seated dollar, although a few handling marks on Liberty's cheek are noted for accuracy. The ever-present clashmark (as struck) in the right obverse field near Liberty's forearm is discernible. An exceptionally attractive AU58 Seated dollar irrespective of date. This dollar was one of the highlights of the Morris Silverman Collection that we sold in 2002.
Ex: Dr. Jon Kardatzke Collection (Goldberg's, 2/2000), lot 1407, where it brought $28,750; Morris Silverman / Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2002), lot 4042, where it realized $33,350.
