Description
Rare 1851 Seated Dollar, MS62
1851 $1 MS62 PCGS. 1851 $1 MS62 PCGS. The 1851 is a famous rarity within the Seated Liberty series. It is more rare than the 1852, whose mintage of 1,100 pieces is slightly less than the 1851, for which 1,300 coins were struck. The latter production does not count Restrike proofs, which are readily distinguished by the lower placement of the date. Although Original 1851 dollars have been cataloged as proofs in the past, these are now believed to have been prooflike business strikes. Given the extremely small production, it is not surprising that there are prooflike pieces among the handful of Mint State survivors. Bowers (1993) surmises these prooflike pieces may also have been the outcome of die polishing to remove clash marks.Only 30 coins have been certified in Mint State by PCGS and NGC combined, some of which are undoubtedly resubmissions. According to our records, only 19 Uncirculated 1851 specimens have made auction appearances through the major houses over the past 15 or so years.
The present MS62 piece displays bright surfaces that are visited by mottled cobalt-blue and light gray patination. The design elements are exquisitely struck, with nice definition on the Liberty and eagle motifs as well as on the peripheral elements. A few minute ticks are scattered here and there, but none are significant. A couple of roller marks at the top of Liberty's head may serve to identify the piece. Population: 7 in 62, 7 finer (8/07).
