Description

1853 Seated Dollar, MS64
Elusive in Higher Grades

1853 $1 Chin Whiskers, OC-1, R.2, MS64 NGC. A Top 30 Variety. Osburn-Cushing Die State c/b. A single die pair struck the entire 46,110-piece mintage. The 1853 Seated dollar earns its Chin Whiskers moniker thanks to the crudely unfinished area below Liberty's chin. This is a late die state, with a die crack connecting stars 1 to 7 and die clashing seen on both sides. Myriad heavy die polish lines angle upward through the reverse shield. Copper-gold, red, and blue toning accents both the obverse and the reverse, with a few pinpoint marks seen on Liberty's portrait. The fields are smooth and lustrous. This near-Gem Uncirculated piece is boldly struck except at the right-side stars. There are no heavy abrasions or marks on the pleasing, original surfaces. Census: 31 in 64, 2 finer (4/25).
