Description
1854 Seated Liberty Dollar, MS64
Rare in Choice Mint State
1854 $1 MS64 PCGS. OC-1, High R.3. Osburn-Cushing Die State
a/a. This is the 1854 early die state, with clear repunching on the
base of 4 in the date and a prominent die line in the denticles
above RI in AMERICA. The 33,140-piece mintage was largely used for
foreign transactions, serving as silver bullion coins exported to
England and China where many were melted. Few pieces circulated
domestically. While not as scarce as the 1851 or 1852 issues, the
1854 is a challenging series rarity both in circulated and Mint
State grades. This Choice Uncirculated example is softly lustrous
and displays smooth, nearly mark-free surfaces beneath a thin
overlay of golden-gray toning. The strike is sharp with crisp
definition on the stars and only brief weakness at Liberty's top
hair strands. A pair of small marks on the jawline are accounted
for by the assigned near-Gem grade. PCGS Population: 7 in 64 (1 in
64+), 3 finer (4/25).(Registry values: N4719)From The Pelican Bay Collection, Part II.
