    1855 Seated Dollar, Reflective MS62
    Low-Mintage Circulation Strike Rarity

1855 $1 MS62 PCGS. OC-1, High R.3. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. Both proofs and circulation strikes were struck from the same die pair, making the identification of 1855 circulation strikes subjective, especially when the coin is an early strike with prooflike surfaces such as this Mint State coin. The strike is less-sharp than expected on a proof, with several star centers rounded, and some strike weakness exists through the eagle's left (facing) side.

Uncirculated business strikes are considerably scarcer than proofs, although both formats are rare for this low-mintage key issue. Just 26,000 pieces were struck -- slightly under the mintage of the equally rare 1854 issue, creating a pair of mid-fifties Seated dollars that continue to challenge collectors to this day. Both sides of the coin display mirrored fields, diminished by a few light abrasions and a thin veil of golden toning. There are no heavy marks, and much of the prooflike character survives. Population: 12 in 62, 8 finer (6/19).(Registry values: N4719)
