Description

1859 Seated Dollar, MS63
Elusive Mint State Specimen

1859 $1 MS63 PCGS. OC-4, Low R.4. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. The obverse is moderately toned in dappled lilac-gray and light-orange hues, while orange-gold toning lightly graces the reverse. The strike on Liberty's head is sharper than often seen, although the left-hand stars show minor weakness. Marks are few and far between, with a toned-over pinscratch near star 5 across Liberty's arm and a trio of short marks near the shin. Of all the Seated dollar issues, the 1859 with a mintage of over a quarter million pieces has probably has the lowest survival rate in all grades. From Good to Uncirculated, this P-mint date is scarce and underrated. Population: 14 in 63, 10 finer (2/24).
