Description

1859 Seated Dollar, MS64
Infrequently Offered in Mint Condition

1859 $1 MS64 NGC. CAC. The mintage of the 1859 Seated dollar was a substantial 256,500 pieces. With such a large number struck, the 1859 should be abundantly available in high grades. However, the story of these coins is not simply one of large mintage equaling large availability. Rather, most of those produced were exported to northern China where they were subsequently chopmarked or converted to bullion again. The result is that few 1859 dollars are known to collectors today (not to be confused with the frequently available 1859-O). This near-Gem is brilliant and well struck, except on the head of Liberty and uppermost stars. A few shallow marks are scattered across the obverse and account for the grade. Census: 15 in 64, 0 finer (11/13).(Registry values: N4719)
