1859 Seated Dollar, Nicely Toned MS64
Rarely Seen Above AU

1859 $1 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The 1859 Seated dollar is seldom encountered in Uncirculated grades, yet we have two near-Gems in this one spectacular auction. PCGS has certified only five other MS64 coins, and two are finer (12/13). More than a quarter million dollars were struck, but with so few high-grade survivors known, it probably is true that most were struck "primarily for export to China." This is an impressive near-Gem example. The fields are noticeably bright from die polishing, and enliven the layers of multiple toning seen over each side. Shades of light rose, lime-green, and blue are interspersed liberally across the surfaces, adding considerable visual interest. The strike is well brought up, but not quite complete, and the only mentionable marks are a series of tiny ones in the field above the head of the eagle.(Registry values: N4719)
